is the speaker lead plugged into the green coloured headphone socket on the back of the computer?

You can test the speakers by plugging them into an iPod or something similar.

It is plugged into the greeni socket, i actually tried plugging it into all the others as well.

If the speakers are ok, and all the settings, volume, drivers, mute etc are fine then it's possible the socket may have been damaged when the lead got pulled out.

Thanks all, I have found the problem, there were three sockets pink, yellow and green. I assumed it came out of one of them but there was another socket at the bottom which was obscured. Plugged the speakers there and bingo, I now have Sound.
