I ordered a dell pc with vista on it last week but i only sent the cheque in the post on tuesday the computer wont be delivered for a few weeks ,after reading the news about windows 7 being released in october and some suppliers giving a free upgrade for those that purchased a vista pc after the 26th of july which would probably be a voucher which you could redeem for the release of windows 7 expected in october 22nd,does anyone know if its possible to cancel an order with dell or whats the best thing i can do?

As Microsoft & Dell are probably going to do the free upgrade. The Best thing to do is to ring Dell and ask them if you are eligble to the free upgrade to windows 7. i would say you probably are, but your best thing would be to phone them, and if you are - ask them if you can have it in writing as well, make sure you get the name of the person you talk to and the time/date you phoned (this is very helpful for future reference)Peter: Hey Lois... what's this word? Lois: Evil. Peter: And this one? Lois: Knievel. Peter: And this one? Lois: Was. Peter: And this one? Lois: Born. Peter: And this one? Lois: In.
Peter: And this one? Lois: Montana. Peter: Ah... oh, hey Lois did you know Evil Knievel was born in Montana? Family Guy - I Take Thee, Quagmire 04x210 -
If they are not going to give you the upgrade then you have every right to cancel, not sure about before you receive PC but you can certainly cancel within 7 days of receiving it, see here:

you may cancel your order under the distance selling regulations up to 7 days after delivery providing you dont use the latptop at all
dont even open it imo
they should refund everything including delivery both wayBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -
First look at the Dell website and see if your laptop is one of those for which they have defined an entitlement to the Windows 7 Upgrade (see bottom left).
And also note that Vista Home Basic is not eligible for the upgrade (Home Premium and above are).
If the above applies (qualifying laptop, Vista Home Premium or above), then ask Dell nicely if you could please have the upgrade to Windows 7, when it comes out on 22 October. Only after that do you want to suggest that you may wish to cancel otherwise. Whether they would accept another order from you after a cancellation is another matter...
Here's a more explicit link about Dell upgrade eligibility.0 -
I had a conversation with the customer services manager this afternoon,he says he doesnt at present know anything about how windows 7 will be introduced which i find rather suspicious he says after a while windows 7 will be available as a free download as vista was for xp customers, surely this guy is blagging he knows exactly what i was talking about and kept on mentioning "vista drivers" are free download from the dell site for xp customers as will be the the windows 7 for vista customers and surely these are just drivers not the operating system which i made quite clear was what i was after,by the way it spent 2 days to get through as the guys voice mail said he was in meetings...i wonder why!0

You should have pointed the "Dell Customer Services Manager" at my Dell website links in my previous post - that would have put him straight.
