Turning 65

Hi, my dad is about to turn 65, and he's a bit worried about how the money he gets will be affected.

He took redundancy bout 15 years ago, to look after my mum, who is disabled.

At the moment he get pension credits, carers allowance, and they get full housing benefit, council tax benefit.

My mum gets severe disablement allowance, among other things.

The thing is my dads work pension kicks in when he's 65, and he was saying he'll lose his carers allowance, they'll have to pay for prescriptions, and pay rent etc.

He's a bit worried about it all, as he's thinking if he has to pay rent etc, then he won't be able to afford it.

I would have thought the total income for them would be the same, abeit from a different source, but he doesn't seem to think so.

Also why would the carers allowance stop?

Any replies gratefully received.

If he is receiveing a works pension and state pension he will be assessed on the income coming into the home so some of the other benefits ie means tested one will probably be affected.

There is a link called 'entitled to' so you could (or he) put all the income into that to see what he will be entitled to. Perhaps another poster could post the link for you.

Your dad wont pay for prescriptions, men havent had to pay for prescriptions for a number of years now.
If your mum is over 60 she wont pay for them either. (there is no mention of her state pension so i dont know if she is younger than this)

Carer's Allowance is a benefit for people of working age. He will lose the CA at age 65. but will retain an underlying entitlement to CA which will mean he will be still be entitled to the Carer's Premium of Pension Credit.

    Thanks for the replies.

My mum has just turned 59. My dad said he would get £118 a week from his work pension, but he thought the pension credits, which he gets just now, will be stopped.

He should also get a lump sum from his works pension, if he has chosen the route to take 25% of his pot, which could be a substantial sum. And also remember that mum will receive a state pension also when she reaches 60 next year.

If he is going to get £118 per week in addition to his state pension of ~£100 then it is unlikely he will be entitled to pension credit. Shame that, most people would prefer to get pension credit as it gives entitlement to a lot of other benefits.

I think a lot of people are going to find that receiving a fairly modest occupational pension means they can be worse off than someone with just a basic pension but also an entitlement to pension credit.

Just a fthought out of the top of my head but the household is going to have quite a decent amount of money coming in each month. I think if he listed it down it might be surprising
