Windows Update problem

Hello

My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition.

Please can someone help with a problem:

When I try and do a Windows Update I receive "Error number: 0x80070002" and the message on the screen says "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

I followed one of the solutions on the Windoes Update help pages but this didn't rectify the problem.

I then searched on Google, and found a page that I think may help. It gave the following advice:

Click Start >
Run >
Type "regedit" (without " ")
> go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services and look for BITS and Wuauserv

When you find BITS and Wuauserv click on it and check the key ImagePath to make sure it says "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" (with out " ")

If it's something different right click the key and click "Modify" copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

If you get an Error saying "Cannot edit ImagePath: Error writing value's new contents."

Right click the folder BITS or Wuaserv (You will most likely have to do both) and select "Permissions..."

Select full control

When I started to follow the above instructions, I discovered that the key ImagePaths for both BITS and Wuaserv did say something different:

"%fystemroot%" at the beginning, instead of "%SystemRoot%".

I continued with the instructions and duly got the Error saying "Cannot edit ImagePath: Error writing value's new contents", and so went into Permissions to select "full control". But it will not let me do this. It keeps reverting to "Special Permissions" on its own, and won't allow "full control" at all.

Could anyone let me know how to put this right please?

My antivirus (AVG) did remove a trojan called SHeur2.ALBQ a few weeks ago, and I am wondering if this has anything to do with it. The trojan is still in AVG's Virus Vault.

Please can someone help?

Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I didn't receive the error code after downloading an update as that page says.

The error is stopping me from starting the update process.

Found this website. It says when it changes from systemroot to fsystem root it makes all persmission read only.

"The way to fix this is to run regedit. Search for "fystem," you won't be able to edit the name to change to "system" because the permissions have been changed to read-only, so go to permissions at the top and change them to full access. now you can change the path to "SystemRoot." Also make sure that the BITS and waupdate services are starting automatically: change the start type to 2 (hexadecimal), or you can run services.msc and change settings there now."

  • Thank you for that but still no luck. My original problem remains - I change the permissions to full access, click on "apply" and then "OK", but it keeps changing itself back.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

You're not doing anything wrong. If this is anything to go by, your system is still infected.
  • Hello TangleFoot

Thank you very much for that link. I'll read the page through thoroughly when I get home from work.

I run AVG, Spybot & AdAware scans every week, but they have obviously still missed something.

Thank you again for your reply.

Whilst AVG's detection rates are passable, it's a real glutton for system resources and the other two are virtually useless. Prevention is better than cure, which is why I use these instead.

    for AVG
go into Test Settings and set it to scan all files & make sure the box for heuristics is ticked

and as with EVERY av product, they work best and fastest from Safe Mode
