Change your Mum to a standard BT tariff (short codes are not allowed for those on BT Basic).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

You could do that but you need to weigh up the line rental saving of being on basic vs. standard rental. If she is only going to make a few calls on 1899 then you are better off staying put. Or 'lend her your mobile'.0

thanks, i told her to just use bt after 6pm and at weekends, she says she does not use the phone during the day if possible.
this all came about when i lookes at her bill she was on low user rate ,she had gone over the limit of calls and bt were charging about 12 per minute a call i think is very expensive , i don't know if other old people know how much they charge.0 -
Calls are expensive but its intended for low users. Plus you get cheap line rental They clearly state what they charge.
Your call allowance

Your £4.50 call allowance covers national, local and international calls. The number of calls you can make depends on the length and type of calls you make. International calls are based on our standard calling package rates.
What happens if I go over my call allowance?
If you go over your £4.50 call allowance, you’ll pay 9.78p a minute (plus 2.93p for each phone call) for all normal UK calls. All other calls are charged at our standard calling package rates.
