Replacing rising main stopcock

We've managed to shear the handle off of the stopcock on our rising main.
Originally this was a gate valve, but I notice that the regulations allow ball valves as well, and that ball valves are supposedly less prone to seizing up but more likely to leak and hammer.
Any advice on what's the best to replace it with, or any tips on how to replace it?

I don't know which stopcock is best but I know when my Grandpa replaced one of mine (I have 2) there is a point outside your house that has a little access hatch and inside there you can turn the water off before it enters your house. It will be in your garden somewhere and is probably 15 ish cm's square.:hello: TTC since 11/090

yes you can turn the stop tap off out side when you find it lift the lid if you dont want to put ur hand down there cause of spiders or its just to deep get a piece of wood and put a v in the end of it this will help you to turn it off thats if it isnt to stiff
when you have the water of you then have two options rather replace the full stop tap or just replace the guts thats the bit with the bigger nut on in the middle you will still have to buy the full stop tap though and just split it i find it easier to do the second option since you dont have to do no pipe work
hope this helped0
