Returning cards on closed account?

I called Capital One to close my account with them and when the guy was reading out the closure spiel of ensuring the balance was clear (it is and has been for several months) blah blah blah he mentioned something about returning my cards to them.

Is this normal practice as I have put them through the shredder, so unless they want an envelope of shredded pieces I can't exactly return them :o ... I don't like the idea of sending my cc's off in the post anyway in case they get stolen!

Would this prevent them closing my account properly?

I successfully closed my Cap One a/c without returning my card. I just stated in a letter that I wanted to close the a/c and had destroyed the card. I have closed my Virgin a/c too - that time I sent them the chopped up card minus the 3 digit security number on the back (just in case someone got creative with sticky tape!).

I don't see any reason why you can't send back the shreaded bits if they insist.

I expect if they want to be awkward they could say the card is their property and therefore can ask for it back.

That said, I expect they will eventually stop sending you statements showing a nil balance and will ask you why your not using the card, when you can expaine, whats what.
Or do your specifically want the account properly closed?

Nothing to do with this post, but beware - its taken 6 months for them to report to Experian and Equifax that my account was settled - this despite numerous letters to myself confirming it had been closed in October and that they would be letting the CRAs know immediately.

I requested they close it simply because I don't use it any more so there's no point it sitting on my credit file, plus I worry that I wouldn't spot any fraudulent transactions as it's not on my daily checklist with not using it.

I now have a very good credit card from LTSB (Advance) with a decent limit and 0% interest so very unlikely to be applying for anymore credit, unless I decide to try for another 0% card to BT this one rather than pay it off from my savings in 6mths time.

I also have a Tesco cc for regular spending (paid off every month) and a Barclaycard, again not used for a while and also considering closing this one.
