First post on here so hi everybody.
I need to get a credit card for the purposes of buying online & selling on Ebay etc. The local building society I have my accounts with doesnt do credit cards. I used to get loads of offers for them through the post but I never looked at them as I didnt need one, now I do I havnt seen one in ages.
I'm not stupid but I know nothing about applying for one: Where should I go? Who should I see? What information will they need from me? Can I do it online? What should I look out for? What features do I need?
There is no intention to borrow money on it & I'll only ever spend what I have the money to pay off. I have no debts & have a fairly secure if low income.

    Hi nonowt,

You can apply for cards online, or post or phone etc. check out the articles on the main site here for a list of the best cards and the best offers. if you are looking for a card which offer better insuarances for online transactions like ebay etc. I suggest you ask/post on the ebay and auctions part of the forum; there are loads of helpful and experienced ebayers there.

    Good luck :D
  • I’ve been using my Nationwide FlexAccount card to withdraw cash when abroad and am quite happy with it. Occasionally, however, there have problems with whatever the equivalent of the Link network is when abroad, or doubts because no Visa logo displayed, or the machine is not working for whatever reason.

My back-up has been to maintain a small amount in a First Direct account giving access to the alternative Cirrus/Maestro/Switch network.

Unfortunately the amount held in the First Direct account is sufficiently small to fall foul of First Direct’s recent proposal to start charging me £10 a month unless I take out another product which I am unwilling to do.

Can anyone advise what other bank accounts use Cirrus, or any other alternative network, or other back-up solution?
  • Im new to this credit card business, have never had one. The reason i want to get one is that im planning to buy a load of computer parts online, prob going to be over £1000 worth. I have heard this is good because then you are protected on your purchases, and if i got a 0% for the first 6 or 12 months, then i wouldnt have to pay it off all at once. The other thing i have thought about is the card rewards, money back on purchases. What would everyone recommend?

I need to find a tool that will allow me to input various CC %ages and BT fees to see if I am better off leaving it where it is and paying it off in a few months, OR BTing it, paying a fee and leaving the cash in the bank earning interest.

Any ideas you wonderful people ?

Quick query: ASDA are advertising 2p off a litre on petrol with their credit card. I really only ever use them for petrol, cos I pass a 24hr self service pump on my way to work. Is it worth me signing up to pay my fuel only and paying off by DD each month? (also think you get 5% discount at George)

And if I pay off every month, will I ever be charged interest

    Thanks ever so!

Me & hubby have just recd our joint M&S credit card. We were planning to just pay minimum pays each month

Am I right in advising kippers to NEVER only pay off minimum amount? You'll never get to the bottom of the debt. There's an article about it on here somewhere...

I don't know how to start a new thresd, so I hope this will be acceptable on the Forum. I'm another who doesn't have a credit card. I am helping my son with an expanding small business and he has asked me to research for business credit card which has best rates and charges little or nothing for purchases abroad. Any ideas? Am I right that you cannot use personal card for business purposes? We would need 3 cards and typical purchases would be flights, hotels abroad (Mainly Africa and Middle East)I have researched loads of sites and info on Business Cards is very basic. Post Office seems one of the best personal cards at the moment, but don't know if they do business. I have mailed them to ask.
