Hi,

We have a 15 year old Micra which is being scrapped and replaced with a new Mini. We had our 3 girls (18,19,19 and provisional licences) on the Micra insurance with my wife and I for about £600. Anyway, the driving lessons have fallen a bit by the wayside (it's really hard with 3!) but I was wondering if I should insure them for the new car. Insurance best quote for me and my wife only is £240 (comp). With the kids on it's £830 (comp)... which actually seems quite good with NC protection etc.
So, my question is... should I do this and be terrified of damage to the new car, or should I later get an older car for the kids which I wouldn't be so concerned about. But then I'd have to have insurance in their names which would be way higher and there'd be the road tax, maintenance etc.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Steve.

You will probably be OK whilst they are learning. Your problems will start if and when they start passing their tests. At this stage just let them use the Mini (you are technically still in control )

I read recently it's cheaper to insure the kids on a younger model car as it's less likely to have been sooped up.

Congrats on the MINI! It will be safe for the girls as well. I look at small, older cars and wonder how they'd stand up to my Clubman in an accident, let alone a big car!

I wouldn't let my son near my mini and he's 25 and been driving since he was 17, I don't even like my husband driving it. Good choice though, at least it's made in this country even though it's German owned.

Let your kids scratch, bump and scrape the Mini to their heart's content, then go out and get the proper kind of mini lol!;)

  • You're buying a new car and proposing to let inexperienced young drivers play with it?

You must be daft in the head. Buy them a £500 shed, it'll be cheaper when they crash it.

I know where you're coming from! However, having been rear ended when I was in my (real) Mini by a BMW 3 series- I wouldn't have wanted my learner driver daughter to drive it. The crunching metal sound still haunts me.

I loved that car. RIP Mindy.

By driving sensibly and hoping the driver of the Clubman does the same.
