No PIN or signature required @ Tesco Self-serve

At a time when many millions of pounds are being spent, on the introduction of PINs for card payments at points of sale, it seems very strange that you can use your cards in Tesco without either a PIN or signature.

A couple of months ago Tesco in Stalybridge introduced some self-service checkouts. At these checkouts you scan the goods yourself. If you choose to pay by either credit or debit card all you have to do is swipe the card through a reader, you are not asked for a PIN.

Suely an open invitation to fraudsters.

It does seem rediculous since the introduction of chipa nd pin that they don't have such a simple security measure in place.

  • Probably will be implemented in time. They can't ask for a signature because who'd check it.

PIN technology will probably mean having to rewrite the entire software for the machine and won't happen overnight.

    Remember 2006 is the deadline.

Also aren't all the web stores an invitation for fraudsters. No need for PIN or signature here either.

You have to provide the cardholder's address when you shop online, so it's not the same.
  • Well the address isn't usually checked, so it is much the same. However the liability for fraud is with the bank in this case, so they obviously feel it isn't worth spending the extra money verifying the cardholders details. As long as you had taken all reasonable precautions to look after your card then you wouldn't be liable for any losses.

At my local Tesco I can spend as much as I like on my card going through the self service checkouts without query. However, what I think is amusing is that if I scan a coupon in like I did the other day for 20p, I have to wait until that transaction is verified!

  • i hate the new pin system, not only dont i know my pin for various cards, but even if i did its not eactly safe typing your pin with people around you, and if they steal your card getting money out of a machine will be easy.
  • At Sainsburys you have to sign at the self service checkouts on a pad but no-one checks so its fairly pointless!

I've had my sig checked at sainsburys, i'm not sure if something attempts to read the back of your card and then compare with what you've scrawled on the pad, or if it's random, but it's certainly happened.

Same for pay at pump at Tescos, Asda etc. They have a numeric keypad but don't request a PIN! I sure do hope they sort this out because at the moment the numeric keypad seems to have no known function.

The same has happened at Tesco's self pay in the petrol pumps for years.... you just put your card in and that's it..!

I just pop in now and then.... :)
