Help! AEG Santo fridge constantly beeping!

Options
Hello

Please can somebody advise me?

I was given a large AEG Santo no-frost fridge freezer by some friends as they were having a new kitchen fitted.

The problem is that about five times per day all the warning lights inside the fridge flash and the unit beeps (beep beep beep beep ......... aaarrggghhh). I usually employ the technical method of switching it off at the wall for a minute and then switching back on again. :confused:

It is driving me nuts. My dogs sleep in the kitchen and it is driving them nuts as well, I think. Both the fridge and the freezer are really cold, so much so that I have adjusted the dials to a warmer setting, although it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Unfortunately the user manual says that when this continuous beep happens it is a sign of a fault in the appliance and to call the engineer out. The warranty has run out. Obviously I am loathe to call an engineer out (would cost about £70 just for the call out, let alone the cost of replacement parts) if this is a minor thing that I could maybe fix myself if I could find a savvy friend or local person to do. Does anyone have any idea what the fault could be? It has been repaired before, apparently, fo an 'electric fault in sensor'. I have just been made unemployed so don't have tons of cash to splash!

I don't really need such a large fridge freezer any more now that my (junk food addicted) foster son has moved out, so would it be more cost effective to ditch this and buy a smaller, new one rather than pay to have this one repaired? I have no experience of fridge repairs because my previous fridge (the first one I ever bought) lasted for 15 years without a problem!

I read on one site that someone else had a similar problem. They got round it by putting the fridge freezer on a timer to switch on and off for a couple of minutes 5 or 6 times a day. I may try this if no-one here has any other suggestions.

Thanks very much for any help any of you may be able to offer.

    When was the last time it was defrosted?

    KWatt - the model number is S3798KG6

    Toffeegirl - the fridge freezer stood unused and switched off for about 6 months before I got it. I have had it about 3 months so I would be surprised if it needed defrosting yet - it is supposed to not need defrosting, and even the ancient 15 year old fridge freezer I had before didn't need defrosting every three months!

    Thank you both for your interest; I hope you can shed some light on this for me!

    Best wishes,

    Hi,

    So far as I can see the warning tone is telling you that the freezer isn't reaching temperature, from the instructions:
    Information: The red warning indicator and temperature warning tone
    will be activated:
    – when the freezer is started up (if the storage temperature has not yet
    been reached)
    – if the temperature in the freezer compartment is too warm;
    – if there is a malfunction in the appliance.
    You can cancel the warning tone with the WARNING OFF button. The
    warning indicator and warning tone switch off automatically when the
    temperature in the freezer falls below -10 °C.
    Such a temperature increase is probably due to:
    – frequent or extended opening of the door;
    – storing large quantities of warm food;
    – high ambient temperature;
    – a fault in the appliance.

    Also...
    The WARNING OFF button flashes in red and a warning tone sounds as
    soon as the temperature in the freezer rises above -10 °C.
    0 1. You can cancel the warning tone with the WARNING OFF button.
    The button will stop flashing and will be illuminated in red.
    3 The warning tone and the red warning indicator switch off automatically
    when the temperature in the freezer falls below -10 °C.
    Such a temperature increase is probably due to:
    – frequent or extended opening of the door;
    – storing large quantities of warm food;
    – high ambient temperature;
    – a fault in the appliance.
    Attention! If suspicion of partial or complete thawing exists, please
    check the quality of the foods to determine if they can be used.
    If the temperature

    Basically, it means that there's a fault.

    Aaaargh!

    Thanks for your help, Kwatt, I do appreciate it.

    There's a little repair shop down the road - I may go in next week and see what he'll charge to come out and have a look. Sadly, given my financial status, it may be cheaper to buy a new fridge freezer than to get this one repaired.:mad: Boo hoo. Oh well. I got it for nowt so I can't really complain! If it can be fixed perhaps the guy will buy it off me and sell it on (repaired of course!) in his shop, so at least I might have some money to put towards another one.
