Redundancy and Compromise Agreement withdrawn

My OH is in the redundancy process with a few of his colleagues at the moment after almost 40!! years with the same company and still in his mid 50s. A very large company who pride themselves on their caring attitude. Anyway I have found the posts throughout this forum invaluable but would appreciate some specific advice. The redundancy procedure paperwork refers to a Compromise Agreement being signed if an enhanced redundancy payment is offered - however when this was raised with personnel although they are offering an enhanced package they said that was a mistake in the paperwork and that in fact no compromise agreement was to be signed. This seems strange in view of the fact that I believed it to be in the company's interest to have this agreement - just wonder what their motives might be? Also some of the posts indicate that you might be able to negotiate more money from the employer by signing such an agreement.
Any advice specifically or particularly would be much appreciated.

If the package is good, the process is followed properly and there are no disputes then an open and honest redundancy through normal process should be fine.
Comprimise agreements are mostly used to buy silence and avoid claims.
over use can be a sign an employer does not do things by the book.
Mid 50's there may be a good deal on the pension if it is still a final salary one.0
