Council tax question

Hi i purchased a property that completed mid may, i was on holiday on the completion date and got back a week later, anyway to cut a long story short by the time a van was available we ended up moving in on the 18th June, before this date i spent around 15 mins every other day or so in the house measuring up. Before this i lived in my fathers house and moved out on the 18th.

With it being a new build the builder sent all my details to council, gas etc and the council sent a bill dating from the completion date, i explained everything and they said we will send an ammended bill out, i got that today and they have knocked 50% off the May council tax bill. I cant understand why i have to pay anything for may as i was not living in the property. Also i told them i did not move one item of furniture into the house until the 18th of june which was also the first night i slept there, so why have they charged me for all june.

To date i still dont have any wheelie bins etc so i have not used anything council related to justify this bill.

Does anyone know if i have a leg to stand on if i call back, i dont want to call up trying to flog a dead horse.

Thankyou

They will tell you what exemptions have already been had on the property.

We had six months empty shared with the previous owner, 12 months as a renovation project and we now have to start paying full council tax because we've used all our expemptions up.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Were you paying council tax at your father's home? Have you formally declared the new house empty (no furniture) by completing the appropriate forms?

Council tax is about more than bins.

If you have driven or ridden on roads or walked on pavements, used the police/fire service (or at least been safe in the knowledge that they were there had you needed them), if any of your children been to school or used clubs, if you have used any leisure facilities, if you have bought something from a shop knowing that trading standards would get involved if you were ripped off, if you have eaten in a restaurant knowing that food safety was guaranteed...then yes, you have been using council tax funded services.

I didn't even read past that part TBH.
