    You have conflicting requirements.

If you want protection for what is quite a big laptop, you need good padding. This is likely to be considerably more expensive than a plastic carrier bag (which would probably be the cheapest option). :D

And requiring to pack other 'stuff' in the bag, also, might cause the laptop to bend.

There are hundreds and hundred of different laptop bags, so you'll just have to look at them in the shops, I would reckon. Here's just one of the websites which came up on Google, Amazon would be another...

It is possible to get a suitable bag (including a sleeve for the laptop and protected sections.) But it won't be flying cabin.

I would purchase one of the pacsafe products, I'm not sure they'll suit your needs with an 17" laptop, but they do have a good range. The benefit of such is that you could anchor it to something and there's a good chance it would still be there once you got back. www.pacsafe.com

Or you could use one of their 'wraps' on your present bag?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PacSafe-Secure-Backpack-Bag-Protector/dp/B000N8GXI2 you can get them upto 120 litres too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PacSafe-120-Secure-Backpack-Protector/dp/B000KFTBFU/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1245876317&sr=1-30

You can see the rest of their range demonstrated here: http://www.youtube.com/user/PacsafeBags

Otherwise there's http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=laptop+bag&x=0&y=0 I purchased one of the Belkin ones and I've been quite happy with it.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

My partner bought a camera backpack from Jessops, it wasn't cheap, probably about £60, but it has all the padding needed for camera equipment, and he can get both of his Nikkon cameras in it, along with a variety of lenses, and it has a 'pocket' at the back that he can fit a 15 inch laptop in, and it just about fits in with the hand luggage rules for most airlines. I think for a 17 inch laptop, it's going to be too big for hand luggage.

I've got a rucksack for a 17" lappy, I take it on planes all the time (whenever I fly anyway lol). It does fit in the hand luggage gauge things.

I didn't pay as much as this one (£44) but its very similar

They have cheap ones at ikea, I have also also often seen them reduced at whsmith. Can't vouch for the quality, as I'm not really sure what you're looking for, but they are definitely cheap (under £10; the ikea ones are possibly even under £3, as some of them are in the sale).
