How could we possibly offer an opinion without knowing what your "up to xxx Mbps download" data rate was?
And what speed tester you used?

Well.... I did say I was not very techie! I did a speed test on my ISP's website and this is what came back. I just dont know how to interpret it - in my ignorance I thought you people might be able to help. Where can I find the information you are asking for?

You will be on a package from your ISP which usually says something like "up to 8 Mbps". But the download datarate you get depends very heavily on the distance your house is from the local telephone exchange - the further away, the lower the data rate is likely to be. A number of other factors apply, but that will do for the moment. Try one of the BT Broadband Checkers to see what figure they think you might be able to get...

The accuracy of speed tests does not tend to be high - the most highly regarded is from ThinkBroadband. Even these results will vary from hour to hour and from day to day, depending on factors like local congestion, other people also wanting to make use of the exchange, for example.

So you may see that you are asking a "how long is a piece of string" question, I'm afraid!

Ok what we need to help you further

    Details from your modem/router:

Sync speed Kbit/s mine is full speed which is 8128
Attenuation in dB - this tells us the length of your line
SNR sometimes called noise ratio - essentially this is the quality of your line

That coupled with your speedtest result and knowing your ISP then we can help advise further.

If you sync at 2Mb then that speed isn't too bad if you sync at 8128 then it's very poor

    Also go here

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

Put your phone no (dont worry its safe) and post code in then click the locality button and see how far you are from the exchange and post it here

If you don't know how to get stats from your router post up make/model and ill find out for you
