Can't cancel card when details stored?

in Credit cards
Hi all,
Wonder if you can point me in the right direction. I seem to remember reading an article that claimed that if you stored your credit/debit card details on a website (e.g your broadband ISP), then you couldn't prevent them taking money on that card even if you cancelled it with the bank. It might even have been in Martin's book that I read it (it's at work so I can't check now).
Can anyone confirm this and, even better, supply me with a link?
Thanks
