Hiring a car , what policy?

Options
Hi,

If someone is hiring a car , do they have to have their own insurance?

If so , what type should they buy?

The driver would be female , over 30 and without any no claims bonus etc as they haven't owned a car before.

Hiring a car from a car rental company? Most of them will provide you with third party insurance. Collision damage waiver (usually charged extra) covers you against any damage you make to the hire car.

Just as an example, we rented a van from Enterprise a few weeks ago. Third party insurance was included in the price. This covered against any damage that the driver does to other people/other people's cars/property. If we had damaged the van (e.g. crashed it), we would have to pay for the van to be repaired.

We paid extra for CDW (collision damage waiver). This covers us for damage to the van, however an excess applied to the cover.

My ex boyf hired a van last year but he was a driver with his own policy so I wanted to make sure.
The "driving other cars" part of most car insurance policies doesn't usually cover vehicles that you own or hire on a rental agreement (i.e. a hire car). Also, it only provides you with third-party cover (like what the rental company will probably give you).

Asuming its a UK hire she will have all the legally required insurances included but will have an insurance excess of ~£500 for damage caused to the hire car that is her fault (including car damaged while unatended & whoever did the damage doing a runner)
For an extra fee (~£10-5/day) that excess can be reduced to zero

Hired a car for a week today and just wondered if I should purchase excess waiver insurance separately online? Can get it for approx £4per day as opposed to the £10 per day that the Ford dealership offered. Just concerned what others may do to the car, ie running into me etc.
