I want to download service pack 3 for windows xp home on my computer but do not want to install it yet.

Could someone be kind enough to provide me a link.

Months ago i downloaded SP3 and tried to install it but it crashed. Later found out it was due to the fact that i have an AMD processor. Heard they have bought a new version of sp3. When i do windows update it says i already have sp3 downloaded and not installed yet. I know it is the old version so am looking for the new version. Where can i find the old version of sp3 on my pc so that i can delete it.

Also the million dollar question is it worth downloading SP3?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

SP3 really is needed as it sorts a lot of 'security' issues out

But im baffled. Either you have SP3 or you dont? If youve uninstalled it (?) but the computer still thinks its installed then your in trouble. Its a MAJOR part of xp so trying to force remove it could cause the computer to fail completely

    heres SP3 ~

the AMD PATCH is also on the page

When i look in control panel-system it shows that i have SP2 version of XP. When i do microsoft update it says SP3 update is available and need to be installed. It also states it is downloaded but not installed.

is auto update set to download but YOU choose when to install?

anyways. Doesnt matter. Simply download from the link I gave. Turn off EVERYTHING you can (anti virus, firewall, internet etc)
    Then attempt to install SP3

erm. I have a Amd Athlon 2500, 1.85ghz chip, i downloaded the SP3 release, last year direct from microsoft, i never installed the AMD patch, and my system runs fine.

Wazza it sounds like the preferences you set in windows update program is to download and not install updates but let you choose. So the file would probably be in your c:\windows\update folder,
NOTE: backup your system before you install service pack 3.

i have a phenom quad (& athlon x2) here and also never installed the amd patch and sp3 works fine on both systems.

i think the amd patch was for a certain make of computer (HP/Compaq i think)

Download the patch from a non-vendor website, turn off your AV and then install it.

I have an AMD processor 4000 X2 I think it is and SP3 is running.

I cannot use internet explorer 6 though and installing 7 completely breaks the system.

I wonder is the AMD fix will solve that issue.

Microsoft surely should have sent me a patch though as well on auto update for AMD processor.

Wonder why I bother buying a licence!!

Maybe a bit of messing around at the weekend then rolling the SP3 back off if possible.

The issue with AMD processors was nothing to do with Internet Explorer. SP3 would cause the computer to fail to boot correctly.

If you can post some more details about the problems you're having then we can try and help. Uninstalling a Service Pack really isn't recommended.
