It doesn't seem to be the actual box - they seem to think there is a problem with the LNBs on the dish. I cannot verify this so am not 100% sure. They were unconcerned as to what was at fault, just that I have to pay for the engineer visit. The box does go unresponsive quite regularly, then switches itsself off (this requires it to be switched off at plug to get it working again) so I think it could be the box and the LNBs (whatever they are lol)

The LNB is that bit on the stalk in the middle of the dish from which your satellite feed cable(s) come. It's the business end of the dish and if that starts to go then there isn't much that can be done other than replacing it.

The good news is that they are not that expensive and can even be fitted DIY if you are technically-inclined.

    RANT!

Personally, Sky are at the top of my most disliked retailer list, followed by Toys R Us. I really don't understand how Sky can operate the way they do - they supply shoddy hardware which has a tendency to fail prematurely, or their technical / development dept have a tendency to meddle, force downloads on you which then causes problems.

I've always managed to save myself the £65 callout by DIY, but the diagnosis is key. If it is the LNB, then providing you're not afraid of heights and have access, it is DIY'able. Similarly, hard drive failures are also DIY'able - the risk is that you get the diagnosis wrong and fork out and it doesn't work - I think the £65 is a guarantee to fix the problem and a 3mth guarantee.

I've also found that their customer service response is employee specific - there are good 'uns and truly awful ones. My last experience was pretty good.

But shouldn't your Sky+ Box possibly last for 6 years in accordance with UK law?

If Sky+ boxes have recurrent faults, that should possibly make Sky liable for this period of time since you received your first Sky+ box.

    Not really.
After 6 months it is up to you to prove the fault was not caused by you or inherent.

Besides, as soon as you take your SKY contract out, the box is yours and not SKY's.
The opposite can be said about Virgin Media.
