Hi
notified by Ntl Net Guard that I had a virus W32/backdoor2.EMEB infecting two files c:\winows\service pack files\i386\ftp.ex and c:\windows\system 32\ftp.exe. They cound not be disinfected so were deleted. Windows asked for sp3 cd to reintall files, but dont have it, downloaded from internet.
It would appear from other forums that this was a false positive detection.
My question is would it be possible to do a system restore to and earlier date to get these files back. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

No, I'm fairly sure that a system restore won't work - it's purpose is to restore a previous system configuration, not to reinstate missing Windows components.
It's not clear whether you've yet downloaded SP3 - if not it should be readily available from the MS Download Centre.
If you've tried that and it didn't work, a "repair installation" using an original Windows installation CD should fix it, without losing any of your user data.0 -
AV has a habit of deleting things that are needed.
I can confirm that restore does not replace most deleted files. Although it does replace a limited number of system files afiak.
Your best bet is to find someone with XP and copy the files you need from that installation.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Hi
thanks for your replies. I downloaded sp3 last year. with regards to repair installations and copying files I think that is beyond me. Will need to get somebody to do it. Many thanks at least now what needs doing now.0 -
do you use ftp for uploading/downloading ?
if not, don't worry about it, if you do there are much better ftp clients.
a popular free alternative is FileZilla 3.2.5, I've been using FlashFXP for a number of year but that's not free.0
