Home delivery - eco friendly?

Golden kipper - ask em. And ring Sainsburys the day before to get back to back delivery. Don't ask, don't get.

Driver today said that he had a full hour of four deliveries. One before me was two miles away.

Assuming that I am getting more than I could carry on the bus, it is more eco friendly, I think, to get delivery as the drivers will use logic to go the most economical route. Almost certainly more efficient with a full route than a car journey or taxi.

My quantity of shopping - more cost effective to get delivery than bus as loads of trips, but that's another story.
  • I get an organic veggie box delivered. The driver says he does a circular route, so there aren't any additional trips out and about. The cardboard box is collected on the next delivery. The majority of the produce is from the UK - why would I need USA apples or Kenyan beans when there are perfectly good ones growing in the UK? (that means you, Mr S/T/A)

When using Ocado, I pick the green van option wherever possible, so I know they're already going to be in the area - cutting down on trips. Sometimes, the drivers phone and ask, as they are in the area, say, an hour earlier, would it be OK to drop the shopping off sooner, thus cutting down on another trip. I get a few carrier bags from them, they collect them when they come back. Their vehicles are energy efficient, the buses/private cars/taxis people tend to use, less so.

If I were limited to what I could carry, I would make 5 trips each week, probably buy far more, due to the marketing/sales techniques, still forget stuff and end up throwing things away as I had damaged them in transit or it had gone off from not being kept properly chilled/frozen in transit.

So it's better for me and mine, anyway.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
