Charging for a credit limit check?

I'm getting a new car on Friday. I would like to pay £1000 on my credit card - the rest with my debit card. My credit limit on my card (Lloyds TSB gold Mastercard) is £6000.
According to the bumpf from the dealer, there is no problem with me using my card. However, it states that they will need to carry out a check on my card to ensure that I have sufficient credit remaining on the card. That's no problem - there's only £70 on the card. It also states that the bank will impose a charge for this check and the dealer will pass this on to me.
Two questions:
Is such a check necessary?
Will the bank impose a fee, and, if so, how much?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The garage will incur a cost of between 2 and 3 % of the transaction and are trying to recoup this but why they are saying it is a charge for a credit check is beyond me.Anything else is a con and a try on.
When you go to pay take your passport and driving licence with you (and a couple of utility bills and bank statements) to make sure that they can't say that they are unable to take the card because you are unable to identify yourself.0
