British Gas Quote?????????????

Options
I nearly fell off my seat when I was given the price. I called BG to get a bench mark, before other quotes. I might of been day-dreaming that it was going to be realistic!

Details: Small 3 bedroom semi, 1 bathroom, 11 years old.

Combi boiler, Worcester Green Star 28i Junior, apparently some pipes not suitable so some need upgrading to 22mm, disposal of old tank, System powercleanse, installation of magnaclense filter(Do I need that?)

Initial quote £3876, but less "Discounts" The final quote was £3226.51.

Is that extortionate? Or am I living in cloud Cuckoo land? I was expecting £2k or so.

Good afternoon: You will get a quote for a better boiler at a lower price from a independent RGI up your way. I'd recommend the magnetic filter (the OH prefers the Boiler Buddy or a Spirovent to a Magnaclean) as well as a powerflush.

Hi...you're welcome;) My OH only installs boilers with stainless steel heat exchangers i.e Vaillant Ecotec Plus 831/837, Viessmann Vitodens 100/200 and Remeha Avanta (the latter two with a manufacturer's 5 year parts and labour warranty). Who ever you get in, check his/her registration with Gas Safe Register.

  • Just a quick update.

Had 2 further quotes, one for £2300 with the Baxi Si, with 5 years parts and labour G'tee, and the other £1800 for exactly the same boiler etc as British Gas.

The only "convienience"was that I could have paid monthly with BG but if I had have gone for BG and paid over 3 years I'd have paid £4280, if I had just paid the minimum it would have taken 10 years and a whopping £7080!!!

Thanks for the link to the Gas safe register Canucklehead, although I saw the cards it was reassuring to be able cross check, and the site was dead easy to use.

Both seemed very competent, so I will probably go with the lower quote.

    Thanks again

  • I too have been astounded by the cost of replacement boilers. I found myself in need of either a fix or possibly a complete boiler upgrade on a house I brought Jan 08. Thought I was looking at around £1000 but BG wanted near on 5K....that's a reasonable second hand car price. To cut a long story short I surfed the web and found Northern Gas Heating who just about cut the cost in half and appear to be offering incentives too. So signed up and got a free shower to boot. The sales guy insinuated they had a selection of freebees to offer during summer.

we've just had ours replaced in derbyshire, we got 3 quotes:-

BG was £3995!! then two local gas care registered engineers, one was £2250 for a baxi 28 & the other was £2000 for a Vaillant both have a 5 year parts & labour g'tee.

If it's just swapping out one combi boiler for another you should be looking at between £1600-£2500.

The engineers wish that they could charge them prices in our area, a straight forward swap (labour only) they charge like £450 / £500 and they are gas safe registered, fully vetted and everything. Oh well they must be doing something wrong here in Birmingham!!!

Our boiler is ancient, has asbestos in it and parts are no longer available for it. I got a quote today from SE for £3250 with some good payment options. BG are coming on Thursday (apparently they don't always tell you about the asbestos removal costs at point of sale so to watch out for their clause on the back of the quote that says charges might be added later "if" toxic substances are discovered during the course of removal). I'm also getting a local recommended guy coming next week but my worry with him is that I guess independents will only take cash? I just don't have £2-3K in cash to fork out in a go. Wonder if this means I'll have to pay the extra to one of the big companies to get the 0% finance for a year?
