Indonesian Rupiah

We are off to Bali in 2 weeks time. Reading up on the place I have learnt that there is a very small limit to how much local currency can be taken in. Is this enforced and do they get you to fill in a declaration? How much is the allowance?

Not aware of major limits, however lots of ATMs around to get cash out.

I entered from singapore (where I took out £300 of rupiah) and can't recall anything at customs pertaining to a restriction on currency. £100 each will be ample until you can get to a bank/ATM.

we just used cash machines when i visted Bali, however there was a departure tax from Denspasar airport which had to be paid cash, we didn't realise and had spent all our remaining change in the airport shop, so we had to go back to the ATM and had to pay another withdrawal fee *grr* (this was in my pre-nationwide card and MSE days)

It is 5,000,000rp (more than £300), or 10,000,000 if you fill in a declaration. I would not take any local money to Indonesia, you will get ripped off in Britain. If you are worried about not having any cash, just take UK £ bank notes, and you will be easily able to change them on arrival. If you are getting visa-on-arrival ($25pp for 8-30 days, $10pp for up to 7 days), the fee is payable in US$, but they have a money changer (for £) at the airport. However, if you want to have cash ready when you arrive, you can change £ for US$ here, and any surplus you can convert to rupiah at a very good rate in Indonesia.

You should be able to confirm this info with the Indonesian Embassy, on 020 7499 7661
