Shop is not local and will cost me a fair bit to take it back and return it. Can I send it back and have them send me a replacement or do i physically have to return it to the store where I bought it?

Why don't you phone them and ask them? Legally they don't have to accept it back by post or send a new one out by post (unless of course, you recieved it by post in the first place...)If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

On what basis do you say they don't have to accept it back by post?
No basis, I just re-read what I put and was supposed to say "Legally they don't have to accept it back by post AND send a new one out by post"
Sorreeeeeeee

I just had this situation with john lewis. An item I bought from their shop is faulty (an alarm clock that doesn't wake you up!).I rang them-they suggested I bring it back. As i only visit that town about every 3 months- i suggested they send me a returns label (why not get THEM to do the work).0
