big of a strange one....

Ok, i was made redundant - and i'm now recieving jobseekers allowance (£50 a week, one of my direct debits is more than this!!!!)
anyway - i'm using my savings to pay my bills and what not aswell as jobseekers....
well last night whilst getting into bed - it gave up the ghost in the most spectacular way you can imagine - i thought i'd been set up and waiting for the late jeremy beadle to pop up...... now if i was on £50 a week only with no savings......what would i do about getting a bed? is there a grant the government give out for essentials and what not?!

Regards
Aaron

    Hi Aaron,

If you Google 'Social Fund' that will detail the various grants and loans that you may be eligible for, depending on your circumstances.
    Gone ... or have I?

If your savings are low enough and you've been on unemployment more than 6 months you can apply for a loan from the social fund (ask at jobcentre) these help with essentials.

Are you getting housing benefit? Entitledto.com should show you if you can claim.

I'd also post your soa in the debt free wannabe forum as they are very helpful and will show you were you can cut down on your expenditure until you find a job.
    Halifax £744 and coming down

    :D

  • just had a quick look on the jobcentre and direct gov site - it now falls under 'budgeting loan' which is repayable.... i'm not on enough to be able to take more out of the little that i get - looks like i'll be having my matteress on the floor till i get a job (makes me sound like a right down and out doesn't it lol)

It's very easy to pick up a bedstead cheaply second hand or even free on Freecycle. Having your own mattress for it is a great help.
  • I would recommend ONW's suggestion and go with Freecycle.

You can place a 'wanted' advert, and see if you get any offers.

The other option, is see if you have a local furniture project. If you are looking for a base only, there might be more possibilities.

Both can be found from Google.

Don't forget with freecycle though, you have to give something away before you can ask for something. Doesn't matter what it is though. Very good idea to try and get a bed from there though :)

Oh it might just be my local group then. I thought it would be the same around the country. :)
