Alliance and leicester

A&L had a 9mth interest free overdraft product as listed on here which ran from Julyish last year.

I was foolish enough to take out this account. If you can't keep on top of things then don't do it! I decided against using the account in the end, and rang them to close it in Augustish. The lady I spoke with said that I should keep it open just in case I need it, as the five pounds charge that comes with the account only applies if you are actually using the overdraft. In spite of receiving a letter in November which said that I would be charged 5 pounds per month if I did not pay in 500 pounds a month, I figured that what the person told me must be a finer qualification of this message, so ignored the letter. Lo' and behold, ring up last week -- the account has been accruing 5 pounds per month charge with no further notifictations that this was occurring, and because the product has since expired (Marchish), I am now being charged for an unauthorised overdraft.

In a moment of weakness I paid the charge that had accumlated -- I have slightly bigger problems at the moment... However, having thought about it, I'm really annoyed. I rang them this morning to get the thing investigated.

Where would I stand on this issue. Should I get my money back?
At least a quarter of the charge is the secondary charge I got for having an unauthorised overdraft since March, but that was only the case because they charged me in the first place when the said verbally that this would not happen...

Thanks,...

  • When they come back to you tell us what they say. You have done exactly what I would have done, ie ring the bank and give them a chronological order of what had happened.
