It is possible to get credit cards in other people's names if you register a name on the electoral roll, I am aware that in some civil service departments that it is the norm for investigators to do this in order to buy things with regard to whatever they are investigating (particularly useful if you are a man and need to buy stuff related to women - best to use a woman's name), this is done with the full knowledge of the employer and any stuff purchased is paid for by expenses. These cards, however, are not used for anything other than work and certainly not for buying petrol or fripperies, so what I am saying is yes it is possible to have a card in another person's name and use it for online purchases if it is something to do with your work.

You need to ascertain why your husband felt the need to pose as someone else to run up this debt? Check your electoral register to see who is listed as living at your address.

As yet your husband hasnt been made redundant and depending on how long he has worked for his employer will have bearing on the amount he will get as settlement. Perhaps the settlement money could be used to reduce the debt?

I don't think the cab will go to the police because they are confidential and will only break confidence if someone is at harm. You could go and see them anonymously prehaps and take it from there?

He probably should confess to the debt companies and have the debts transferred to him and make arrangements to pay. Ignoring it will probably make things worse because eventually he will get found out.

    hi,

not sure if this is much help at the moment, but you really do need to go and see a debt advisor, as previoulsy said i do not think they can report your husband to the police.

my OH ( works for a big financial organisation, but not a horrible person honest!!), said the credit company could persue him for a fraud claim, they may ask him to prove who he is ie ask for a Birth Certificate in his " new name" etc.

i hope you will manage to sort this out, you sound very supportive to your OH.

if you need further advice PM me and i will try to get any info you need.

    Hi Rachel

I'm not quite sure if I've got my facts right - hopefully someone will some along with more knoweldge about this particaular area.....

I was under the impression that once you've entered into a DMP you cannot then take out further credit as this would nullify your existing DMP.

I suspect this could be why your OH took out a credit card in a different name

So before you contact any company ou are currently organisng your DMP, and in order we can help advise you the most appropriate course of action - can you tell us how is the existing DMP organised.....are you doing it yourselves or via a fee paying agency or via one of the debt charities such as CCCS, or National Debtline.....

I think you need some legal advice Rachel - maybe reporting him to the police too although this may seem drastic, it might bring your OH to his senses.

Maybe if you controlled the budget and gave him pocket money so he didnt feel as though he was without money may help? What has he spent the money on? Is it stuff that can be sold?

If he has set out deliberately to deceive then it could be classed as obtaining money under false pretences which is serious and tantamount to theft.

    Hi Rachel

I think I would be inclined to contact CCCS and explain the situation to them and see what they say.....they may be able to advise the possible implictions for your existing DMP.and help you work out a new DMP to include the new CC debt..And as they are not handling your DMP atm I don;t think they have any obligation to inform the credit card companies....they could however handle your new one as a fresh start.....

I also think you need to see a solicitor to get advice on legal situation and how to minimise the chance of prosecution.....

There is a sticky at the top of this board where you can talk to a CCCS adviser ...

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1231527

...might be worth putting a post on there first and see what they say

Sorry I can;t be of further help...hope you manage to get things sorted
