NP!
As already mentioned, my guess is that it is the ISP or contention, but to be sure, you need to rule out all other possibilities.
If norton doesn't check for spyware, download one or two of the freebies, microsoft defender, lavasoft ad-aware etc.. There is a sticky thread at the top of this forum screen, mentioning other possibilities.

Patching.. go to https://www.windowsupdate.com to make sure your PC has the latest Windows patches (hopefully the PC should be setup to do this automatically in control panel, security center)
Rootkits..

You've all been great with this - I've just spent a few fruitless minutes with the windows updates because of the connection being so patchy, the green marker would be moving just so far then stop, I'd have to wait till the connection came back again then try again......and on....and on...so what I'll have to do is wait till tomorrow when it resolved again (I hope) then run all these checks that you've flagged up for me.
I can't thank all the posters enough, it looks like you've given me the direction that I need to go in to get it sorted.
I'll let you get back to your evening now, thank you so much!0 -
As BigAl94 has said - line quality is also an issue. As the contention grows, the signal may be weakened if the line is already poor. I have had trouble getting BT to do anything though as they say the issue needs to come from my isp (even though I pay BT £11 per month for the privilege of such a poor line). To infinity and beyond!0

needless to say, everything is perfect at the moment so until I can get BT to take another look at this line (luckily I'm with BT as btinternet as well) I'll just have to make sure that I do what I need to do during the day and forget about the evenings and weekends0

Don't know what your setup is however we had this problem a few years ago and it sounds exactly the same was cause by a dodgey connection in the modem, there was a slight break in one of the wires in the modems USB plug, it would disconnect for hours then suddenly work, have you tried a new modem to see if there is any difference.0
