Speed tests only measure data travelling to and from your computer and the server hosting the testing system. As such, nothing it tells you can be considered valid aside from the fact that you are connected to the Internet.

always a pretty subjective subject
I tend to use dslzone's test mainly, but with speedtest, speed.io and thinkbroadband for checking/verifying results.
For the record, I sync at 4900kb/sec,
get throughput of 4100-4200 kb/sec on dslzone
4200-4400 kb/sec on speedtest
4000-4250 kb/sec on speed.io
4000-4050 kb/sec on thinkbroadband
so they never match, as apart from anything else, you will never get exactly the same throughput at any given time. They record in different ways too, which adds to the confusion
Best advice is to stick mainly to one and get to know how it reports your line, so you can see if you're getting problems or not, and only use as a guide. If you want to check real download speed (i.e. kb/sec of data to your pc, as opposed to bandwidth normally stated as the speed of your connection, e.g. 4 Megs), try setting off a download of ubuntu and seeing what throughput you get......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

p.s. are all your things like flashplayer, shockwave, etc up-to-date, as if they're not it can cause havoc with speedtests, depending on whih of these things they use.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

What antivirus are you using? Do you use Avira by any chance? It's just one of the antivirus programs that's known to cause strange results.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Perhaps have a read through this article on the errors in speed testing... (Speedtest.net is notoriously inaccurate)0
