can I claim on insurance for purchases ?

I bought a laptop as a gift for someone on my Asda Mastercard just over a month ago.

My query concerns the protection you get from your cards for purchases. I've just found out that the laptop is no longer working. This was because water was split all over it :eek:

Would I be able to make any sort of claim from my credit card company either for a repair or insurance claim. I've contacted them but initially they have said no... I know that sometimes they will refuse first of all to get rid of your call, where do I stand legally with this ?

Any advice you could give would be much appreciated !!

No. You would be covered by your home insurance depending on a) whether you had any and b) the nature of the policy.
