Many interior / architectural designers post on Gumtree offering their services at fairly low fees - this would be a way of avoiding the 'sales-push' of a kitchen company

You do not need a plan. What you need is to decide what you want and do a sketch with all the dimensions on it to make sure it will all fit in. It is not rocket science. Many years ago we had someone in from one of the sheds. What she designed was useless. It was designed so as to use the maximum number of units, so as to benefit the supplier. We took her plan apart and worked out what we actually wanted. Saved the cost of several units and ended up with a more practical design. Would not use a designer again. Especially not with a cheap kitchen
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • When designing my own kitchen, i've previously used IKEA's own software design programme. It's limiting, however it did help to see it in 3D to get different ideas. I am now looking at a large extention, however IKEA's software is not good enough for that. I have since looked at the Grand Designs 3D software. I'm not sure how easy it will be to use - however it will be much cheaper then getting a designer in - plus allow me to look at lots of designs in my own time...

can you design a kitchen as good as a professional designer?
  • no - point taken - however could save a lot of money trying different designs before going to a professional...

I suspect the OP probably no longer cares - this thread is 4 months old!
  • i had a designer who did me a couple of different designs (one fee) - very good. i still havent put a new kitchen in but have shown the designs to various people i know and taken on board a lot of comments. with that i have tweaked his design and now i know pretty much exactly what i want.

my next step is sourcing the cabinets and doors. 4 years ago i found a company in nottingham via ebay that sold me really great solid (not flat pack) cabinets, doors and gadgets for a fraction of the price on the high street. but i cant remember their name and have lost their contact details - very annoying.

but i might have found a factory that makes them i can buy trade from so there is another avenue. i managed to have a 15k kitchen for 5k in my last place and im intending to do so again.

I had a plan done by B&Q a few weeks ago. They gave me the full list of what's needed, ie unit sizes, drawers plinths etc. They'll go through the design with you. Cost nothing.
  • i think some of the DIY places may actually have unique sized units so double check that first
