I know some friend who left their old job to join another copmpany (retail).
When they interviewed they was told they would get a 3 day trial.
they did do the 3 day trial and worked for a number of days after however, head office said they are overstaffed and would be making my friend redudant.
is this allowed?

because someone could start offering Jobs like at 60k a year etc, then de3cide they dont need them, just to mess them around(as they would have left old job0 -
Your point being?
Its not very professional to do that, but there is nothing wrong with it.
It could be a sudden change of circumstances occur resulting in overstaffing0 -

Not technically wrong as pointed out but rather stupid if they knew cuts were in the offing as they may have had to pay recruitment fees..
Unfortunately in this instance, doing something stupidly annoying and unpleasant to an individual is not in breach of employment law.
They should pay your freind their notice period. (Though if they were on trial I imagine this was minimal)
Worth your mate contacting their old employer also - humble pie is better than no workGo round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0
