Plumber advice needed re new boiler please

Hi,
We have had our offer accepted on a house which currently has a system boiler installed. It doesn't look very old, it's a Glow worm 18sxi if that helps. The radiators don't look too old either, so they were probably installed the same time as the boiler. We would like to remove it and install a combi boiler, as at the moment the boiler and the tank occupy the 3rd bedroom and really makes that bedroom unusable because of the space it takes up.
We've had one plumber come round last week who hasn't emailed a quote yet, and my husband spoke to another plumber today who will be coming round on friday... he worried us slightly though by saying that it's not just a case of removing one boiler and fitting a new one, we'd need a full system flush and radiators too. He said that as an estimate before seeing it we should expect to pay £5-6k. We hadn't quite budgetted that much
Is he right and how does that price sound?
Thanks

id of thought if it wasnt that old and it has had an inhibeter in the system the old rads should be fine to use again and wont need power flushing my friend a plumber in hull would supply and fit you a ferrolli 31 a rated condensing combi boiler which has a 5 year parts and labour guarentee for around 1500 these are the prices you get when you live in hull so you would need to pay for travel depending were u lived
hope this helped0 -
we're replacing our current system - system boiler and cylinder - with a combi. it involves moving the boiler upstairs to the cupboard in the bathroom, and running new gas pipes.
we're also getting 5 new rads (with valves) supplied and fitted AND a wireless stat in the lounge.
we're getting quotes around the £3000-£3200 mark.
I guess this could change if you get diff rads/boiler, but i think £5k is way off the mark!0 -
Thanks for the replies! Ncooper, that price sounds much more what we were hoping for!
Forgot to say that we are in Surrey (probably too far from hull skinback) so I guess prices here are going to be that bit higher. Also my husband works for Siemens and can get a Worcester boiler cheap, so we can supply our own boiler. May not be able to get it as cheap as trade though so we will ask for a quote for both supply and non supply.0 -

Good afternoon: The Surrey-based RGI you have had in to quote is taking the proverbial as is one who is quoting on Friday. Did #1 test the mains pressure and flow rates to determine whether your property could benefit from a combi or comment on whether it could be resited thus saving you some major dosh? Your Glow-worm would only be a few years old and condensing.
I suggest you ask around for a personal recommendation from a source you trust. Always check a RGI's qualifications here. My OH is always amazed by the lines some of his competitors spin to potential clients..

Ah thank you canucklehead, i pm'd you earlier before actually seeing your post!
We still haven't got a quote through from the first plumber, so not looking good there and the plumber who was supposed to come round on friday has cancelled on us! Not having much luck!
Thanks intech, i have saved your details.0
