Here's a different slant - if you're coming from Hampshire are you doing A36 to the M4 around Bath?
If so you might consider stopping in Bath at Royal Victoria Park where they have a massive (I'm not kidding!) kids play area, plenty of space to run around, he/she can feed the ducks on the pond all for free. You can then take the back road out via Lansdown to the M4 and pick up your journey. I guess ideally you want to get further on but if you are coming that way and are running late it might be a back up plan. Try not to stray too far into Bristol on a weekend by road as the traffic can be quite heavy. (Bath is no better but if you are coming through anyway there is no loss!)Adventure before Dementia!0
