Barclays basic Cash Account

Hiya all,

Just a quick update for all you about to apply for a Barclays Cash account. I wanted a basic bank account. with no overdraft facility or fancy stuff. after searching my excellent moneysaving website, this seemed the account for me. so off I trotted to my local Barclays, I filled in the forms and handed my ID over after talking to the advisor at length about about my bad credit rating and wanted to make sure the account didn't require any credit searches, she assured me there were no credit searches and they only did a electoral role search just to confirm your identity.

After 6 weeks of waiting and phone calls to head ofice who told me to be patiant. I headed back to my local branch, eventually after lots of waiting around I got through to the people who approve the account I asked why i`d not heard anything, the chap said it was waiting for for approval and he could get a decision there and then. After a couple of minutes of waiting he comes back and tells me it had been declined I was very surprised as I didnt thing you could be declined. imagine my shock when he said i`d failed the credit search, I said I didnt think there was a credit search, he said there was. I want away VERY annoyed thinking they'd done a credit search without me knowing and not only that theyv further damaged my credit rating.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Hi Bugs, from what I've read on the threads this account should be checked for fraud and I think electoral roll information. Can I ask did you ever have a debt with Barclay's that was written off? Pretty sure that could be a decline:eek:
There has been quite a few postings on this subject, but sure it was easy to get.
The other thing if you are bankrupt, unless you are ''discharged'' you can't have their online banking.

PS. Unless you have had lots of credit searches it can't really harm your credit files.

Yes this happened to my husband , he went bankrupt and wanted a barclays basic account who are supposed to accept bankrupts and he was declined , he was also declined by the other bankrupt friendly bank co-op . We couldnt understand why he was declined as he is on electrol roll and no history of fraud as checked credit files.

I went to the CO-OP bank and asked about their basic cash acount, i asked about the account and whether a credit search was necessary as i did have bad credit and i would probably fail. they confirmed that no credit search would be made, after putting in the relevant info they said it had been referred, i asked why (since there was no credit search) and the woman said they didnt know why, just wait for a letter in the post to confirm yes or no and the reason why.

letter came, sorry but your application for an account was declined, it read...

I havent been made bankrupt (yet) the only thing i have are various debts.

i currently have a nationwide cash account, which is fine, the only problem is its lack of chip, which is why i went to the co-op.

Barclays are also a big user of National Hunter. They check for inconsistencies in people's applications.

i have had a few defaults on my credit file and 1 cj and i managed to get a co-op cashcard account about 5 years ago

last year i applied for a barclays cashcar account because they had a visa debit card which the co-op was just an electorn card and was not accepted at alot of places

considering my credit default - 6 of them seems a bit strange that they have declined people unless in view opf the recent banking crisis they are tightnening their belts further ?

The only reasons for decline on a Cash Card Account are suspected fraud, write-offs within the Barclays group, or system error - it will sometimes generate a "false positive" and decline certain applicants erroneously.

There's no belt-tightening or anything in play here. Sorry!

well barclays must be the only bank not doing any belt tightening in view of the current economic situation

    Hi,

I filed for bankruptcy in 2004 following the collapse of my Ltd Company, whose business account was with Barclays. I've been discharged for years now and yesterday tried to apply for a cash card account, but was refused straight away. Would my old limited company business debts be the cause of this?

    Many thanks,

    FC

As said, you could try appealing, but if we wrote off those debts, then we would indeed decline to do further business with you.
