You make soda farls with buttermilk and you right 'Wee bargain hunter', they good pizzas, deep pan.

Soda bread, topped with some tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, onions, cooked bacon and cheese then cooked in a hot oven for 10 min is delicious. It's known as a Paddy's Pizza in most cafes over here.

Does anyone know if I can make Soda Farls using - ahem! Instant Mash?? There is a reason for my madness - I don't always have potatoes in. I eat them so rarely that they go green and sprout, so I buy as I need them (and am able to carry them)! but I always have Instant Mash available......

beedeedee, soda farls uses flour. Potatoe farls uses potatoe.
  • I made up 16 of these tattie scones yesterday with the left over pots from bangers and mash and was delighted with them - thanks for the tip! I actually managed to freeze 8 of them before they got eaten up as well! Its amazing how little potato you have to use by bulking it up with flour - very pleased - thanks again for tip.

If you have no room in your pan or just don't want to fry them then they toast really well (just to heat up, not instead of the initial dry fry!)

I finally got round to making some last night, we had them fried with eggs for brekkie and they were to die for.

How silly that I'd never thought to make my own.

Ok here's the recipe for the soda farls that the baker was making on UTV the other night. (The link showing the demo of the potato bread & soda farls being made is working now btw and will be there for about 4 weeks I think) I was hoping to try the recipe out first but just haven't had a minute. However, the baker is award winning and people buy the stuff he makes so can't be bad!
(was hoping Pink-winged would be back with her tried and tested recipe though - her tips are usually spot on :D)

    Makes 8 soda farls
    • Put 700g sr flour in bowl. Make a "well" in the centre.
    • Add 600g buttermilk (I wrote down "g" not "ml" - are they the same?)
    • Use hands to mix.
    • Divide into 2 pieces and put onto a floured board.
    • Shake flour over them and kneed.
    • Roll out and cut each piece into 4.
    • Cook for 4 mins on each side on a heavy frying pan or griddle.

Thanks for the tip Shereen. I usually put my irish pizzas under a low grill so that they heat through thoroughly and then put under a hot grill at the end so that the cheese colours. Will try the oven next time - will be much easier when there's a big crowd of us! Having said that, I usually fry the onions 1st for flavour and cook the mushrooms a bit too so that probably helps it heat through.

Thanks Pink for posting your potato bread pics. They really show how it's done:A

I think this is a fantastic example how humble, everyday ingredients can be turned into something sublime with a little care and love.

I was wondering the same thing ... he DID say grams. So how do we measure 600g of buttermilk? Anyone know what that is in liquid meaure, please?
