Car buying tips please!

Hi everyone,

me and my boyfriend are looking to buy are first decent car, and i was wondering what is a reasonable discount to ask for on a car, i've seen a 2008 civic type r (im sure some will say this isnt your idea of a decent car but im not here for the car discussion lol )we really want it and its on for £13999 i have a 2006 corsa to chop in im pretty sure they will give me 3500 for that as i was offered that much at the vauxhall dealership, i could get more private obviously but i cant be bothered with the hassle i really want the new car!

so anyway other than the trade in money is in the bank i have no idea what the car market is like at the minute but they dont seem to be doing much, so would you offer them £12500 for it or is that ridicoulously cheeky? id be perfectly happy to get it for £13000. i want to get a good deal but dont want to sound stupid in the process i am a girl after all so they expect me to not know what im on about. i dont to be fair but thats why i need your help!

any other tips appreciated its my second biggest purchase (after the house) and i refuse to pay full price for anything that can be negotiated on!

Thanks in advance :)

Ask the same question here you will get a much better informed replies.
I totally approve of your car choice, makes a change from the 60mpg motors that people on here usually want.

What I usually do is find the trade price of both cars, (I use thecarpeople.co.uk, finance & part exchange page) subtract the price of the corsa from the civic so you have a price to change, and start your negotiations from there. You may have to do a bit of serious haggling
but it works everytime for me, or the other way I used is find the price of both cars when they were new (including extras) and subtract one from the other and you have the price difference. I know cars depreciate differentley but it's a good place to start, It worked on my last purchase a 56 reg Mini Cooper trading in an 07 Civic sport. The balance worked out the same as if I had bought the mini new instead of the civic.
    Hope this all makes sense.
