DFS Sofa Deposit

Hi,

Hoping I can get some advice please.

My mum in a fit of madness last week went to DFS and bought an expensive sofa which she pretty much immediately regretted buying and phoned up the next day to cancel (Less than 24 hours after buying).

DFS told her they'd already ordered the sofa, and as such they'd keep her deposit - £200, it can be used as a credit to buying soemthing else. That's a lot of money for my mum, and she's a bit upset over.

I called up to try to clarify with them, and they told me the same spiel - though the guy I spoke to wouldn't give me a number for head office so I could clarify their policy (I can't find one either), which I found a bit odd.

Can anyone give me some advice on this, does my mum have any rights for a refund or does she just have to suck it up?

Many thanks in advance.

John

  • The Head Office No is: 01302 330365 (This is what came up as "HQ" when I entered "DFS" into www.saynoto0870.co.uk)

    The address is:

    DFS Trading Limited
    1 Rockingham Way
    Redhouse Interchange
    Adwick-le-Street Doncaster
    South Yorkshire
    DN6 7BD

    Good Luck!
  • Most high street retailers will refuse to cancel orders because like you say they've "been ordered" "its too late" its a load of non-sense the manufacturer wouldnt have even received the order by the time you rang.

Kick up a stink and I'm sure you'll get a refund.

Did your mum buy it in the DFS sale by any chance?

There was a poster on here with the same issue as you a few months ago, if I remember correctly she got all or most of her money back. Have a search of MSE forums and you may find it

they can indeed withhold a deposit but only if its proportionate to any financial losses incurred by making the order and then cancelling it

in this case, if they have begun delivery they can with hold the deposit to pay for this and the return delivery(to a depo etc)

now £200 does seem excessive for costs incurred at just 24 hours but i honestly dont know where you go from this

get your mum to submit her request in writing and include a request to see a fully itemised breakdown of costs incurred to them from her order and cancellation if they still wish to with hold her deposit. She may later be able to challenge this deposit amount.

others will be along to help but do contact consumer direct asap
