Pre-paid electric meter -change

My wife has a buy to let property with 'normal' electricity supply chargeable to the tenants on account.
The tenants have acted on their own accord and applied to have meter changed to pre-paid.
We are not 'jumping up and down 'about it; but would prefer this not to occur.
Our tenants and the electrical company have both said that the tenants are allowed to do this; and that as the electicity account is in the tenants name; they can in effect 'make the rules' on this.
Is that correct ?

My understanding is that a tenant can have a pre-paid meter installed without consulting the landlord (unless specifically put in the tenancy agreement). They are the ones paying the bills after all. To be honest I think it is better on your part to have a pre-payment meter in place because you know that you cannot be left with an outstanding bill if the tenants disappear. When I moved into my property the previous tenants had racked up a £1000 odd water rates bill and then disappeared. I understand that you can have the meter changed back at any point also.0
