Can i still claim????

Hi, I had a savings, current and credit card account with the halifax. I had a standing order set up to transfer money from the savings acc to the current acc to pay the credit card every month. I moved to france and still kept this standing order up. Whilst in france i didn't check my bank statements,YES i know how stupid of me. However i had been paying the credit card like this for years i didn't see a problem. WRONG!!
They cancelled the standing order without me knowing and then i of course went over drawn on the current account, which tried to pay the credit card and then got charged on the credit card for non payment. The halifax ended up closing my current and credit card accounts. The first i knew of any of this was when i moved back to UK 2yrs ago(i was in france for 4yrs) and i had a call from a debit collection agency saying i owed them £1800 as my Halifax debt had been passed to them.
I have since then been paying them £23 a month to pay this debt off. But can i claim the bank charges that they put on the accounts back, even though i was at fault for not checking statements. Nearly all of the £1800 debt that im in is charges,as whilst abroad i did not use my credit card or current account, i only kept the accounts open to pay off the credit card and had no other bills coming out of the current account and feel that if they had not stop the standing order i would not be in this mess.
So the question is can i claim, i do not have the account numbers any more, but my son's saving account that i am linked to as a guantor is still with them and my accounts where linked to his at one point,so could they get my old numbers from that account?
Sorry for lots of questions but any help youcould all give would be great.
Thank you.xx
