Bizarre PC event

Was surfing this morning quite normally when suddenly my whole screen went to yellow, white and black diagonal stripes.

No facility to reboot normally. I had to cut the power at the mains.

After restarting, I ran Avira only to find that that programme froze at around the 14% stage, ditto with the screen again.

Once again I had to cut the power in order to reboot.

Now I'm running scared of touching anything! Don't know whether to try Avira again or whatever. For the moment, net access seems normal.

Any ideas or suggestions very welcome indeed.

reboot the pc,

then hit the F8 key, before the 'windows' loading screen
this should bring up a black screen with white menu

select safe mode

if it loads up windows ok (in safe mode - will have text at top and bottom of screen)

then rerun avira
