Hello, i have been with Tesco insurance for 2 years, i wanted to swap one car for a new one. They couldn't find my car details with the reg, but seem to be having problems with finding it manually as well. I didn't want the risk of not having the correct insurance so i wanted to cancel.
The one girl said it would be about £69 but i would have £40 back from the breakdown. However, when she passed me on, another person told me it would be £169.00, surley this can't be allowed?

What car is it, maybe we can heklp and then you can point Tesco into the right option.
The Tesco website will be pretty much the same as the system they use in the call centre.
Is it a "smart" or something?
Also, if they are having problems locating the car from the reg you would be wise to HPi check your car and have it looked over incase the plates have been swapped. A little warning bell went off in my head.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

You need to know the breakdown of the £169. It certainly wont be a £169 fee. Chances are the fee, if there is one, will be no more than £50 with £25 the more common figure.
However, you have to pay for the period of cover and if you pay monthly, your monthly payments are not likely to be in sync with that period of cover and having to pay some more in premium is likely.
It may be better to stay with Tesco until renewal and just change the car on that policy. They should be able to find it unless its really obscure or totally brand new model. Your best bet is to push Tescos again to find your car.
Call them up with the V5 document in front of you so you give the correct model etc.
You need a breakdown of the refund.
Some of it is cancellation charges, some of it may be for cover owed.
Yes they can sometimes make errors over the phone.
My experience is that if they make a error and tell you the wrong thing, then there is nothing you can do.
If they still can't find the car, then ask to speak to a supervisor and ask them to waive the admin fee on the basis that you don't want to leave but it's due to them not being able to insure your car (if you don't ask you don't get).
But even if they waive the admin fee, there may still be a premium outstanding for the cover you've had, if you haven't paid it all up front.0
