funny noise on washing machine

Sounds like a penny rolling round and round, but it happens when machine first starts and at certain points of cycle, and while the drum is NOT moving!
It is about 6 years old, and Hotpoint - so know it doesn't owe me much! We have had a few odd repairs, not costing a fortune, but wondered what it might be before I call repairman or search online for good deals on new machines?
Any ideas gratefully received.

This may help you...
We have a Bosch washing machine and had what sounds like the same noise coming from it last year. At the front of the machine near the bottom left corner is a round panel about 3-4 inches wide. This unscrews and low & behold we found a 5p piece in there. Removed it and job done.
Hope this remedy works for you, i know it saved us calling somone out.0 -
We've found exactly the same! Other culprit was a hairgrip!
Behind the screw-out plug is what looks like a small propeller used to pump out the water ... this will be in operation to drain the water AFTER the wash/spin cycles, which might explain why you hear such a noise when the main drum has finished turning.
Small word of warning ... depending on how well the pumps been working with an obstruction, there MAY be just a bit of water left in the bottom of the machine, so worth having something to hand to mop up a small spill.
Best of luck!0
