travelling from glasgow to edinburgh
Options
Hi There. I've just got a new job on Princes Street in Edinburgh and will be travelling through from Glasgow at least 5 days a week. I was wondering what the cheapest option is. I have looked into monthly rail tickets which seem to be about 300 a month. I could also get a young persons railcard and buy a ticket everyday but save a third. Or I could go by bus but I will have to be there for 9 every day. I love about 15 mins walk from queen street stration in glasgow. Does anyone do this commute regularly and has any money saving tips. Thanks!!

I used to do this journey a few years ago, I used to go by Citylink bus. It leaves from Buchanan St station & goes to the St James' bus station at the end of Princess St. The bus I got left Glasgow at 07.05 & then every 20mins after that. These things might have changed since then but it was the cheapest at the time.
I got a 10 journey ticket from the bus driver, the cost at the time was £21. This ticket would do you for a Mon/Fri travelling twice each day.

Can't you get a young persons discount on a season ticket?
All in all season tickets are usually the best way to go, unless you can get an advance purchase fare every day, but for before 9am that's usually unlikely.0 -

Definitely go with megabus (althought Citylink is often cheaper also). Huge masses of folk travel between the cities this way.0

The megabus journeys will be on Citylink buses in this case.
The bus will be cheap, the YP rail card will only bring cost down to 'minimum fare' at that time of the day. Your cheapest option is Citylink- but slow on buses in the morning- M8 centre to centre I'd allow for 1 and a half hours in a car minimum and with tram works bump that to 2!
Train will be quickest, most reliable although busy and cost more it is the only way to go IMHO.
I don't envy you one bit- it is not a nice commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh- I've done it occasionally and it wasn't enjoyable!0 -
i hate even driving to edinburgh, the M8 after the fort is the most depressing place i can honestly think of to spend time, and i enjoy driving.
its usually raining, theres usually an accident, the traffic moves and then stops for ages for no apparent reason, nobody pulls into the left, average speed is around 15 mph and get slower at bathgate junction 4.
if the price difference isnt too bad take the train. rather than be at the mercy of the M8's daily troubles....work permit granted!0 -

Yes, however, I always find that the Citylink and Megabus websites have different prices, quite a few times the Citylink prices are cheaper than megabus!
So it definitely pays to check both websites.0
