Single Person Council Tax

I will soon be renting a flat/house in England and have heard that there is a discount on Council Tax for single occupants. As I am moving from Northern Ireland, I have no clue what this is, how to apply for it or if I can apply - I am completely new to the English system.
Can anyone give me any advice or point me in the right direction?
Thanks

It is a 25% discount for sole occupancy. Just let the council know when you notify them that you have moved in. It is your obligation to notify them if this subsequently changes.0

When you receive your council tax bill it will have the details of your local council office. You just need to phone them and apply for single occupancy. They'll send the necessary forms. You receive 25% discount for single occupancy.0

does anyone know if council policy has changed re this.... at one time a landlord could claim 25% single person discount on an empty property if the 6 months empty property period had expired. i am just informed by one council that i cannot claim this any more

re above, You get a 50% discount for a maximum of 6 months, then it goes onto a full charge (100%). You cannot claim a 25% discount unless you live in the property yourself, it always goes to 100%, backwards as that may sound...0

The discount for an unoccupied/unfurnished property varies by authority(after the class c exemption has ended) , since 01 April 2004 an authority can set the relevant discount between 50% and 0%.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
