Problems Getting Data Off Dead Laptop HD

I've taken the HD out of the dead laptop, put it in a USB caddy, attached it to another pc & can see the drive & the files on it, but I'm not allowed access

I've done a bit of Googling & from what I've read, the problem is because the main account was passworded & to be able to copy the data I need to turn off simple file sharing, but apparantly this isn't possible running XP home

can anyone suggest a way round this problem?

Most linux Livecd's will allow you to access these files, change the attributes then copy them over as required

thank you, thank you, espresso :)

it took me a bit longer than I anticipated because my laptop wasn't too happy powering the USB caddy for the file transfer, but after connecting to my desktop pc it's been a complete success & I've been able to rescue my son's artwork that he'd put on the dead laptop (unknown to me)

a lesson about backing up is in order for the young man I think!
