Dear folks on MSE,
I have been around for a while but this is my first post.Firstly, my husband has suffered with mental illness since 2001, he receives HRC and LRM.
Anyway, I also now have serious problems with our son, who has great difficulty leaving the house to go to school. He suffers panic attacks, anxiety and is very depressed. He is at a bad age because he is only 14. I have the GP and CAMHS involved. He also has a teacher from Home & Hospital Tuition Services getting involved shortly. Well, the crux of the matter is, I applied online to DLA for him and have recieved a letter today (Expecting to be honestly NO) saying they will get in touch with his Psychiatric Doctor, my dilemma is should I contact her and tell her about the DLA claim or just leave things to happen in their own good time.
I do not want to seem that I am putting any pressure on her.
Please let me know what you think.
Thank you

Although I love Zara, I would say let things run their course, the health and future of the boy is the most important at present.

Thanks for your replies, Zara & DUTR, I just don't want my son to get involved, he feels bad enough but to think I have gone behind his back, I couldn't stand that at the moment . I guess that is why I am hesitating. Indeed my concern is my son, sometimes to the detriment of his father, unintentional but he is the child. Do you think I would be putting any pressure on the Doctor. I am scared that if it fails she will think differently about us. I really need her support and I know how difficult DLA is to get...0

Hello tatiepot,
I always write to my daughter's Gp and Consultant when I am renewing her claim for DLA.
I do it as a matter of courtesy, so they know in advance that they may be contacted.
I also use it as an opportunity to update them about all of my daughter's issues, especially as in a short 10 minute review, it is not possible to cover all issues that are going on.
On a personal level, I think 14 is a difficult age for teenage boys.
It was the age that my son's mental health really deteriorated, with the pressures of school work, options, exams, combined with lack of support.
He dropped out at the start of year 11, and it was only then, did I get the help to find out what support was available to him.
Aside from the DLA, try and get to the route of your son's problems. I found connexions were a really good point of advice. Once you have a little idea of the causes of your son's panic and anxiety attacks, you can start to address the issues.
