Problems With Wireless Cutting Out

I have Virgin cable broadband and up until last year my computer was always plugged straight into the modem and I never had a problem..

When I got a laptop last year my dad gave me a Belkin Wireless G Router (Model F5D7230-4 Ver 7). When it was first set up most days it would lose connection and i would have to turn off then on again the router and modem. I then learned that I should update the firmware on the router. I did that and worked great and it never cut out.

Last week my wife got a Ipod Touch and due to the fact I had forgotten the password had to press the reset button on the bottom of the router. It started cutting out again. I again updated the firmware but it still cuts out now.

I have the Virgin cable going into the NTL modem. I then have a ethernet cable going from the modem to the router. I have another cable going from the router to my desktop.

Usually the desktop loses connection as well and i reboot both modem and router to make it work again.
A minute ago the laptop listed the wireless network (Which it usually doesn't) but it woudn' log onto it. The desktop was fine. I rebooted just the router and the laptop works now.

Any ideas how to fix it?

Also my modem which was ffree from NTL is quite old and the router is a few year sold. WOuld changing either speed up the broadband speed?

Thanks.

virgin 'should' provide you with a modem for free. We got a new one when we complained about the speed of the old one(which was also free from virgin).
If the modem loses the connection then the router will too as it gets the signal from the modem so a newer modem might help things.
