Sending email from Mac via Mail/Entourage

My second mac technical question this week... I really hope I don't need to go back into a technical job anytime soon :o

I've got my broadband up and running, and my ibook G4 attached (via an ethernet cable to the router, as I haven't got round to sorting out wireless yet). However, the email accounts (tiscali) that used to work quite happily via dial up (well, it was about 4 years ago that I last tried it!), will receive (yes, I've got a lot of clearing out to do) but not send...

... I've tried both Mail and Entourage, and neither work. When I try verifying the setting in Entourage I get the following message: Verification Failed: "Sorry, your non-local IP address (**.2**.3*.1**) is not allowed to send email via me." (-17099 )

I can't find anything on the tiscali site, or anywhere else that suggests any solution other than using webmail to send.

My parents are both on macs, and my mum has the same problem, but my dad doesn't. The only difference I can think of is that he connects wirelessly rather than via an ethernet cable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated... I need to get myself sorted out as I'm expecting to be made redundant imminently, and need to be able to use something other than my work laptop for applying for jobs :rotfl:

This sounds like a Tiscali problem, not a Mac one. Looks like their SMTP server has latched onto your dad's IP address and is only allowing emails to be sent from there. As long as you're sure you've got all the settings plugged in correctly.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't think it's just that, as my parents live about 200 miles away from me... and although they are talktalk customers, their mail is through doctors net. But my mum at least has the same problem as me ... ironically, my dad is one of the most technically inept people around, and I set up his laptop with exactly the same settings as my mum's iMac. Mind you, he's probably found the answer by randomly pressing buttons he's been told to leave alone :rotfl:

You need to check the SMTP settings are correct, what are they currently set to?

Thanks... settings appear to be correct, but it may be because I'm connecting via one ISP to a mail system supplied by another... something to do with their security settings. It's very tedious, so it looks as if I'll either have to change my email accounts (I have so many though....) or my ISP to the one that most of my accounts are with

Seems strange to me I have never had a problem routing my mail to another companies mailservers through my ISP. But I have heard of problems from the likes of tiscali because the mail is not coming from an IP on their network it rejects it

Can you not use your ISP's SMTP servers? Who are you with?

You can recived email from your tiscali account and relay out through another account like gmail if it helps

Agree with above from s3quence - when using my POP email on my mobile phone, I have to use Orange's SMTP server, not my POP email provider, strange as it may seem.

Is you current ISP tiscali ?

Also your SMTP might need authentication to send mail.
